How to Keep Your Bank Account and Credit Safe Online
In today’s digital world, protecting your financial information isn’t optional—it’s essential. Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, which means every consumer needs to stay proactive about safeguarding their bank accounts and credit.
At Prevail Bank, we believe financial security starts with awareness and simple, consistent habits. Here’s how you can stay one step ahead and keep your money—and your peace of mind—protected.
1. Strengthen Your Passwords
Your passwords are the first line of defense against fraud.
- Use unique passwords for every account
- Create passwords with at least 8+ characters, including a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
- Avoid common words, phrases, or easily guessed information (like birthdays)
2. Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of protection beyond your password.
When enabled, you’ll be asked to verify your identity—often with a code sent to your phone—before accessing your account. Even if someone obtains your password, MFA can help stop them from getting in.
✅ Tip: Enable MFA wherever it’s available, including your banking, email, and social media accounts.
3. Monitor Your Accounts Regularly
Don’t wait for a monthly statement to review your activity.
With online and mobile banking, it’s easy to:
- Check transactions frequently
- Set up alerts for unusual activity
- Catch suspicious charges early
4. Watch Out for Phishing Scams
Phishing emails, texts, and fake websites are becoming more convincing every day.
Protect yourself by:
- If you are not expecting a link or attachment, regardless of the sender, just don't click it.
- Verify the sender before responding.
- Go directly to official websites instead of using emailed links.
5. Use ATMs and Public Devices Safely
When accessing your accounts outside your home:
- Choose well-lit, high-traffic ATMs. Hidden ones or those in dark areas are easier targets for ATM scammers.
- Check for anything unusual on the machine (loose parts or attachments). If there is, don’t use it and report to the financial institution.
- Cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
6. Keep an Eye on Your Credit
Monitoring your credit report helps you spot issues you might not see in your bank account.
You’re entitled to free credit reports from the three major bureaus:
- Experian
- Equifax
- TransUnion
If you are a Prevail Bank customer, consider signing-up for Credit Sense; you can get your free report through us.
7. Consider Freezing Your Credit
A credit freeze is one of the most effective ways to prevent identity theft.
When your credit is frozen:
- New accounts cannot be opened in your name.
- Lenders cannot access your credit report without your approval.
