Text Message Scams Are Surging — and Financial Institutions Are the Prime Target

If you’ve received a text message claiming to be from your bank, you’re not alone — and you’re right to pause before clicking.
Text message scams are increasing at a rapid pace, with cybercriminals increasingly posing as banks and financial institutions to pressure people into taking immediate action. (One source reported that, “Text-message attacks with the cybercriminals posing as financial institutions surged an eye-popping 343.6% between October and December of 2025.”)
These scams are designed to look familiar, feel urgent, and create fear — all in hopes of gaining access to your personal or financial information.

At Prevail Bank, keeping our customers informed and protected is a top priority. Understanding how these scams work is one of the best ways to avoid becoming a victim.

Why Scam Texts Work So Well

Banks and credit card companies hold a unique position of trust. Cybercriminals take advantage of that trust by crafting messages that appear routine and legitimate, which makes fraudulent messages harder to spot. These scam texts often contain language like:
  • “Suspicious activity detected on your account”
  • “Your card has been temporarily suspended”
  • “Did you use your card at …. Please verify a recent transaction”
  • “Act now or your account will be locked.”
These messages are designed to trigger panic and prompt immediate action — usually clicking a link or calling a phone number embedded in the text.
Once a victim engages, they may be redirected to a fake website or connected to a phony customer service agent. From there, scammers attempt to harvest login credentials, personal details, and even one-time passcodes, giving them direct access to accounts

Financial Institutions Are the Top Target

Text message scams pretending to be banks and credit card companies have grown so rapidly that financial impersonation now represents nearly half of all reported phishing texts. Other common scam categories — including fake government alerts, job offers, and delivery notifications — now trail far behind.

The Real Risk: One Click Is Enough

Most modern scams don’t rely on advanced hacking techniques. Instead, they rely on human behavior and emotion. A quick click or call — especially when someone is distracted or worried — can expose sensitive information in seconds.
In many cases, a single click is all it takes to compromise an account.
